Equine Health
By Dr. Jeff Hookstead
Spring time is analogous with equine maintenance.
Vaccination updates, dental exams, internal parasite control and Coggins
testing are timely topics. West Nile Disease continues to be a concern in South
Wisconsin with a diagnosis of West Nile in a horse in Dodge County last year.
Keeping your horse current on the basic vaccines like West Nile, Tetanus, and
Eastern/Western Encephalomalcia will help keep your horse protected against
these
diseases.
Seasonal dewormings while alternating dewormers
will help keep both your horse and your pasture free of parasites. Good
parasite control, along with annual dental care will keep your horse in great
condition.
Too often owners wait until they see their horse
dropping feed or losing weight before they have the horse’s teeth fl oated.
Floating the teeth annually will minimize how much dental correction is needed
and will be less expensive in the long run.
